Chondromalacia Patella – Pain at the front of the knee
Wear of the cartilage that sits behind the patella (knee cap) at the front of the knee. Caused by excessive strain on the patella, for example if you spend long periods of time on your knees or over-use in runners. You may suffer pain when walking up and down stairs or suffer a dull ache when sitting. Foot pronation is often the cause of this.

Treatment

  • Foot Orthotics (arch supports) will restore poor foot function and improve shock absorption, hence reduce the
strain on the knee. If the symptoms are severe the surgeon may carry out a fairly simple operation
called an Arthroscopy, in which he may remove the worn out cartilage.

Patella Tracking
The patella (knee cap) comes out of the groove that it should sit in. There are rarely warning signs and it is often rather painful.
There are a few possible reasons why the patella may dislocate:

  • Muscle imbalance around the knee
  • Poor foot biomechanics (Often the result of foot pronation)

Treatment

  • Physiotherapy to improve the balance in the muscles surrounding the knee.
  • Foot Orthotics (arch supports) to restore foot function, reposition the knee and reduce the likely hood
    of Patella Tracking.
  • An Orthotist can provide a Knee Support to help hold the patella in the correct position.

Patella Tendonitis
The patella (knee cap) rests in a groove which helps with smooth movements of the knee. Patella tracking is when the patella comes out of the groove that it should sit in when bending and straightening the knee. There are rarely warning signs and it is often rather painful. The cause is over-use of the tendon.

Treatment

  • Knee Support will reduce the strain on the tendon thus reduce the degree of inflammation.
  • Foot Orthotics (arch supports) are also extremely effective, particularly to control foot pronation.

Arthritic Knee
Wear and tear in the joint will cause pain in the knee and possibly the hip and foot also. As arthritis is a progressive condition the symptoms will often increase with time.
